Honda Civic Type R

Honda Civic Type R

Replacing a legend is never easy - but Honda has went a long way to doing just that with the amazing Civic Type R.

In this sector of the market, competition from the likes of Ford, Vauxhall and Renault is strong. But has the Japanese marque made this a car with more style than substance?

The Civic also scores big on the design stakes, it has a smooth but imposing stature. From its striking front splitter to its double-deck spoiler at the rear, this car is an aesthetic masterpiece - setting it miles apart from it rivals on pure looks.

The new age design extends to the cabin, where the space-age dashboard and dual-level display show just how hard Honda has tried this time around.

The seats are great too, they hold you in place really well when driving enthusiastically.

So what about its on-road manners?

Well the 2.0-litre VTEC engine produces 198bhp and it plays a glorious tune when you feather the throttle. The car responds directly but would be even better if the steering was weighted a little more. The car is raw and you need a firm grip on the steering wheel as there is a lot of torque steer when exiting corners especially on greasy roads - leaving you feeling a little nervous and the traction control working overtime. It has a top speed of 146mph and will launch you from zero to 60mph in 6.6 seconds.

One of the best traits is the six-speed gearbox, it's snappy and lets you easily keep the power plant singing at high revs. The car is a boon on both A and B roads and is a real 'drivers car'.

Yes there are quicker and more comfortable rivals, yet few can match the Civic Type R's engaging nature with the exception of the Ford Focus ST 500.

Verdict:

A space age design with raw power - a true hot hatch priced at £18,615.
