Peugeot 407 SW Sport 2.2HDi 170 - DRIVEN
The Peugeot 407 SW has set new standards in style when it comes to the space race. The car has a sharp angled rear giving it a short rear overhang and makes it one of the best looking estate cars on the market.
However this trend setting style has a drawback as the boot space with the rear seats folded – 1,365-litres - is some way off its rivals.
The process of folding the rear seats is not as easy as some rivals. You have to pull the base of the seat and then you need to fold down separately. Whereas, the system in the Honda Accord Tourer, works by pulling a single lever to lower the rear seats.
Inside the 407 SW you can see that the interior has been carried over from the saloon – which means build quality is good and all the dials and gauges look neat. There is a mass of controls on the centre console but don’t be worried as these are simply navigated if you just take a few moments to read the controls.
The 407 SW shares the same platform with the 407 saloon which means the wheelbase is the same length – there’s plenty of room in the rear for those of average height but if you’re more than six foot then it may get a little cramped.
One of the best features was the panoramic roof – especially when you’re driving at night as the passengers in the rear get a brilliant view and the cabin has an airy feel about it.
Powering the 407 SW is a 2.2-litre HDi with 170bhp, the diesel engine is impressively refined and almost whisper-quiet, both at idle and when cruising – and when you need it pretty responsive.
As the needle passes 2,000rpm you can hear a little turbo whistle and you can feel the car becoming more responsive. The 407 SW is a relaxing and easy car to drive however when pushed there is a little body roll when cornering.
This is one of the most stylish estate cars around and if you can afford to sacrifice a little space for a great look then this is the car for you and the family.
